[post_content] => Once described by Alan Paton as the most beautiful school in South Africa, Hilton College is situated on a 1600 hectare estate looking out towards the Karkloof hills. The Reverend William Orde Newnham must have been equally impressed when he arrived at the farm "Upper Hilton" owned by his friend, Gould Arthur Lucas, to open a "Collegiate Institution" on 29 January 1872. He came with his wife and three young children, Mrs Dore the nurse, some fifty boys and fifty pounds. The English public school system was followed - rugby and cricket were played, a mounted cadet unit was established and Hilton boys became notable for learning, gentlemanly behaviour and rugby football.

Under successive Headmasters, Hilton College has developed its own personality due to its unique heritage and magnificent environment. The Fleur-de-Lys and the motto "Orando et Labarando" (by work and prayer) were adopted by the second master, Henry Vaughan Ellis, an old Rugbeian, to show the affinity between Hilton College and Rugby School in England. The Hilton College of today is a far cry from that humble school of 1872. There are now 555 pupils and many special and excellent staff at the school makes it one of the leading schools in the country.

[post_content] => The Karkloof Conservation Centre is a unique and exciting joint venture between the Karkloof Conservancy, The Wildlands Conservation Trust, SAPPI, Birdlife SA and the Southern KZN Birding Route. This Centre is run by members of the local community, represented by the Karkloof Conservancy.

The area is rich in biodiversity and has much to offer. All three Crane species, and many other interesting birds visit the wetlands and dams near the bird hides on a regular basis. There are also a few antelope species, serval, caracal, mongooses, otters, and abundant frog and insect life.

The public can enjoy the true splendour of the Karkloof wetlands from a comfortable seat in a beautiful bird hide where one really feels part of the natural surroundings.

This project is an exemplary example of how high tech agriculture, conservation and tourism can coexist harmoniously without disturbing ecology.

The office is open weekdays from 8:00 to 16:00. An honesty box is in place for weekends, the early bird twitchers and wise old owls who enjoy sundowners.

There is an entrance fee of R25 per adult, R15 per child (children under five years get in for free). Every Friday pensioners only pay R15.

Please make a booking for larger group visits, functions and if you would like to make use of our braai facilities.

[post_content] => There is something deeply special about indigenous forests. The lush luminosity of life played out in near-perpetual shade, the warm dank scent of sweaty growth and languorous decay. Everyday from 08h00 - 16h00 the second largest indigenous forest in South Africa situated at Karkloof 18 kms inland from Howick comes alive with people of all ages and sizes experiencing a true Tarzan and Jane Adventure, on slides of up to 200m long which take them amongst the birds, monkeys, trees and plants of this magnificent forest.

The system has been designed and constructed by a civil engineer.During the tour two or more trained guides ensure the safety of each group while describing interesting facts about the ecology and life in the forest.

The experience starts with a briefing session at the Karkloof Canopy Tour base camp. You will also be kitted out with your harness, safety helmet and sliding glove where opportunity would be given to ask your guides questions. Should you wish, the option to go tandem with one of your qualified guides is an option open to all, he then becomes your ABS brakes and all you do is enjoy the ride. After briefing you will be taken up the mountain in a 4x4 with a short 60m walk to the first platform.

                    [post_content] => HORSEPLAY
A Horse Whispering Experience for everyone!

Ever wanted to have contact with horses, but outrides seem scary? Ever wondered what it would be like to have a horse as a friend for a day? To have a horse connect with you and bring out the hidden horseman in you? Before you are even on his back? Kilgobbin Friesian Stud invites you to find that horseman within you.....come spend a morning playing with magnificent Friesian horses and learn more than just horse sense!

At Old Kilgobbin farm in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands, Dargle Valley, you will be introduced to natural horsemanship. Here, over the course of three to four hours, you will acquire the basic knowledge and skills required for engaging with horses on the ground, rather than on their backs.

Your first task could be to lead the horse allocated to you in a figure of eight around two of the barrels in a paddock that resembles a giant playground. As you soon realise, no amount of tugging and pulling, or whispering for that matter, is going to get a suspicious 600 kg Friesian to do your bidding. By the end of the training, you will be standing in the centre of an arena with your horse "at liberty" (without halter), successfully instructing it to circle, stop, change direction, come to the centre, walk backwards to the perimeter and circle again, using only body movement and gesture.

In the few intervening hours you will learn that communicating with horses (rather than coercing them) has got nothing to do with whispering and everything to do with horse play!

Not just for horse lovers! Takkies, sunscreen and a sense of fun is all that is required!

Held most days at Old Kilgobbin Farm, no12, D707, Dargle, KZN. Booking is essential. Small private groups as well as larger corporate groups are catered for.

Please note: no children under 12 unless discussed with management and no outrides offered.
